The CMM (Coordinate Measurement Machine) Technician operates, programs and performs inspections using SRI’s Open-DMIS software driven CMM’s. The CMM Tech also trains and educates SRI’s Inspection Team on proper use of the company CMM’s. The CMM Tech develops setups, fixtures, and establishes methods for efficient CMM operation and inspection of piece part components as required and can evaluate against 3D CAD solid model files. The CMM Tech verifies feature dimensional and visual inspections related to pro type, first article parts, in-process and production assemblies, also performing final checks, validation and testing using the CMM, manual metrology, non-contact optical and vision systems, engineering drawings, procedures and work instructions. Assures all CMM inspection programs are filed for repeat and future use and performs periodic CMM Preventive Maintenance functions per a planned schedule.

Essential Functions (includes, but are not limited to the following):

  • Operates and utilizes the CMM by programming and saving inspection routines and using pre-written programs as the CMM Inspection Team Leader in the department.
  • Develops stable and repeatable set-ups on the CMM to assure efficient and accurate inspections can be repeatably performed. Creates related written work instructions when and where appropriate for all CMM operators to use assuring repeatability.
  • Understands and exercises the use of GD&T concepts and applies that feature dimensional language (GD&T) requirements as per the related engineering drawings.
  • Calibrates and periodically qualifies each CMM’s probes using established routines.
  • Perform inspection(s) of products to check for conformance to specifications and evaluates inspection results to determine compliance to drawing requirements.
  • Utilize vision-based equipment such as non-contact CMM, Optical Comparators, Microscopes, etc. for measurement and inspection of parts.
  • Utilize other manual and hand-held measuring tools such as calipers, go-no/go gages micrometers, height gages, dial indicators, profilometers and other like metrology.
  • Communicate inspection results effectively with co-workers and department staff.
  • Lead special projects per departments Management instruction in a timely manner.
  • Respond to and communicates with Suppliers, Customers and internal Management Teams as inquired, in a timely, clear, concise and comprehensive manner.
  • Document inspection issues, problems and concerns then notifies the customer and appropriate internal SRI department leaders using the DMR, MRB & CAR processes.
  • Ensure the proper filing of inspection records and results on the company server. Ensures equipment and work area are clean and organized including performing basic and required daily / weekly Preventive Maintenance of the CMM machines.
  • Manages inspection and department records, documentation as required and defined in QC work instructions and as instructed by department Leadership.

Job Qualifications

  1. Experience operating CMMs with the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings with a deep and in-depth understanding of GD&T and its true application.
  2. Ability and knowledge to properly utilize common mechanical inspection metrology and equipment.
  3. Competent using office-based software, (Outlook, Word, and Excel), possessing the necessary skills used for record keeping, data collection and reporting.
  4. High school diploma or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  5. Work overtime when requested and as needed to accomplish department and company commitments and tasks.
